Seeds! Seeds! Seeds!

This week, we have been looking at a variety of seeds and what they need to grow.  We compared seeds and discussed how they look and feel different from one another. We learned from our poem of the week, that seeds need: soil, sun, water, air and space.

 

"The cucumbers and the peas have lots of seeds inside."

"Look at all the peas inside!  The outside is like a little bed for them!"

"These seeds are baseball seeds because you eat them at baseball games!" (sunflower seeds)

"Can I water my apple tree that I planted?"

 

 

 

 

 

We read a book called, Jamberry.  The bear in the story loved all types of berries.  We talked about how berries grow from seeds. Some of the students had not tried the berries discussed in the story so the next day, we brought berries in to observe, smell, touch and taste.   

 

We asked:

How does the berry look?

How does the berry smell?

How does the berry taste?

Where are the seeds in the berry?

Which is your favourite berry?

  

"I'm going to be like the bear and eat all the berries up!"

"These blackberries are juicy!"

"I like the blackberries best!"

"The strawberries taste like sweet juice."

"The blackberry is all bumpy like the raspberry."

"All the seeds are in the middle of the blueberry."

"I'm going to draw all the little balls like a raspberry."

"The raspberries have lots of seeds!"

"I like them all but not the raspberries.  They are sour."

"This one is my favourite!"

 

 

               We also opened our "flower shop" this week.  The students were busy arranging, selling and buying bouquets.  Just in time for spring!!!  We also did some flower printing at the art table.
